Since its low in 2020, outbound roaming has been on a steady recovery, driven largely by the resurgence of international tourism. According to our latest data, there will be over 1.7 billion roaming mobile subscribers this year; a figure set to reach almost 2.2 billion by 2029. This growth marks a significant rebound as travel returns to pre-COVID levels, with both business and leisure travellers increasingly relying on mobile connectivity abroad.

While the outlook for outbound roaming is promising, it’s not without its challenges. The rise of travel SIMs and eSIM technology is disrupting the market, offering travellers more flexibility in choosing their connectivity providers. This poses a potential threat to traditional roaming revenue for telecom operators.

To stay competitive, operators must focus on developing their own travel SIM and eSIM solutions, tailored to the specific needs of their markets. For example, US operators will need to prioritise Canada and Mexico, which are forecast to account for over 65% of outbound roaming from the US in 2025. Meanwhile, UK operators should focus on European destinations like France and Italy, which are expected to lead in outbound roaming for UK travellers.

With international tourism and roaming demand on the rise, the market offers significant opportunities for telecom operators who can adapt to these trends and deliver flexible, customer-centric solutions.
