Fintech & Payments

EPI (the European Payments Initiative) has given up on its effort to build a rival to Mastercard and Visa in Europe after more than half of its members left.

Founded in 2020, EPI aims to create a unified payment solution tailored for Europe. It was initially backed by 31 major European banks and acquirers, such as Worldline and Nets. Recently, 20 banks have withdrawn, including all Spanish members, as well as Germany’s Commerzbank and DZ Bank.
