Verizon has announced that Google Messages will be introduced as the default RCS application on all Android devices purchased from the carrier in 2022.

Verizon Communications is a broadband and telecommunications provider in the US, offering a suite of wireless, Internet, TV, and phone services. Based in New York, Verizon is considered one of the top three network operators in North America, alongside AT&T and T-Mobile.

Google is a multinational technology company specialising in Internet-based services, with more than 70 offices across 50 countries. Google Messages is an application developed for Android devices which is capable of supporting various messaging formats, including instant messaging, RCS (Rich Communications Services) and SMS.

Shared micromobility provider Lime has announced a partnership to integrate its electric scooters, bikes, and mopeds into the journey planning app Moovit.

The company’s vehicles will appear as a bookable travel option in Moovit from next month and can be used for either all or part of a multimodal journey; that is, a journey that utilises multiple transport modes including public transit, rideshare vehicles, and shared micromobility.

Visa has signed an agreement to acquire payments platform Currencycloud; valuing the latter at circa $700 million. The two companies already have a strategic partnership involving cross-border and travel payments, and Visa was also involved in a recent $80 million Series E funding round for Currencycloud. It is anticipated that Currencycloud will continue operating from London and its management team is expected to stay the same.

Belgian enterprise network operator Citymesh has acquired ENGIE M2M; a Sigfox network provider in the country. The decision was made to improve Citymesh’s operational network capacity, which the company now claims runs ‘from 0G to 5G’. The deal was accompanied by the exit of all of ENGIE’s M2M current shareholders.

This week, Indian eCommerce giant Flipkart announced that it had raised $3.6 billion in funding in a new round, with financing from main backer Walmart, as well as SoftBank and GIC.vThis financing takes Flipkart’s valuation to $36.7 billion, supported by total funding to date of $12.6 billion, since its launch in 2007. The fundraising reportedly leaves Walmart’s ownership of Flipkart at around 74%.

Vodafone Spain has selected Ericsson as its technology partner for the development of a 5G SA core, which will enable the operator to deliver a full 5G service to subscribers in Spain. The Vodafone Group is a British multinational telecommunications company, with significant presence in Africa, Asia, and Europe. Based in Sweden, Ericsson is a provider of information and communication technology to service providers.

A group of senators in the US have submitted a bipartisan bill that seeks to boost federal support for telemedicine services in frontier states and states with limited broadband access.  If passed, the Rural and Frontier Telehealth Expansion Act would increase federal funding for telemedicine services, including audio-only teleconsultations, by 5% if the state covers telemedicine services under Medicaid and is a frontier state such as Nevada, Alaska, or Montana. The bill also applies to states where less than 90% of the population has access to fixed broadband capable of 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload, as defined by the Federal Communications Commission.

It has been announced that new subscribers joining, or upgrading with, EE from 7th July 2021 will face roaming charges whilst roaming in Europe from January 2022.  EE is a British network operator and Internet service provider, offering a range of smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and laptops. EE is also part of the BT Group, a British multinational telecommunications company with a presence in 180 countries.

Last week, payments solution company Visa announced an agreement to acquire open banking platform Tink for a reported $2.2 billion. Tink, founded in 2012, is a leading open banking infrastructure provider within Europe. Based out of Sweden, its solutions serve over 250 million European bank customers; accounting for more than 100 billion transactions per annum.

Leading CPaaS vendors, Infobip and Sinch, have both announced that they will provide access to Instagram to enable their clients to communicate with their customers via the social media platform. This has been achieved via the Messenger API and is available to all developers. Instagram was launched in 2010 and currently has over 1 billion users globally.
