BMW Group has announced that it will offer 5G in-vehicle service which leverages eSIMs to provide cellular connectivity. As the automotive OEM, BMW Group has complete control over the design of vehicles across its range. This partnership represents the first time an automotive OEM has directly associated with a tier 1 operator dedicated to in-vehicle 5G connectivity.

The German federal government is looking to expand a recently published EU proposal that smartphones should have replacement parts and software updates for 5 years, while tablets should have 6 years. The current proposal also would require that part prices for replacements be published and remain unchanged throughout the replacement cycle, but does not provide guidelines on such pricing. The parts are to be available at a maximum delivery time of 5 days.

Fintech Insights: Point Raises $46.5 Million in Series B Funding

Reward-based debit card start-up Point has raised $46.5 million in Series B funding, led by Valar Ventures, with participation from Breyer Capital, YC Continuity and Human Capital. San Francisco-based Point was launched in July 2020 as a consumer banking app combined with a debit card; aimed at reproducing the experience of a credit card without the need for a credit check, by offering a debit card with point-based rewards. The card comes with an annual fee of $49.

Syniverse has announced its intentions to become publicly traded via an upcoming merger with M3-Brigade Acquisition II Corporation. On August 16th, it was announced that Syniverse has entered into a definitive merger agreement with M3-Brigade Acquisition II Corporation, which will result in Syniverse becoming a publicly-traded company.

Samsung has announced that its SmartThings platform will now support edge computing, as part of a move away from the Groovy legacy platform. As part of this, the company indicated that the platform would allow support for Zigbee and Z-Wave, with more connectivity forthcoming in the future, including Matter, the standard promoted by the organisation of the same name formerly known as CHIP (Connected Home over IP).

This week, African fintech OPay raised $400 million in new financing backed by SoftBank Vision Fund 2, valuing the company at $2 billion.   The round had involvement from existing investors including Sequoia Capital China, Redpoint China, Source Code Capital, Softbank Ventures Asia, DragonBall Capital and 3W Capital.

Verizon and AWS are to expand the coverage of their Wavelength Zones into three new cities in the US; Chicago, Houston and Phoenix.  Previously, this service was available in 10 US cities, however, this has now increased to 13. Wavelength leverages AWS to provide computational and storage at the edge of commercial 5G networks. These services will minimise latency between the end user and their services, and the number of ‘hops’ over networks to access the content.

Agricultural technology giant John Deere has signed a deal to acquire Bear Flag Robotics, an autonomous tractor startup based in Silicon Valley, for $250 million. The autonomous systems developed by Bear Flag have already been deployed on a limited number of farms in the US and this number is likely to rise; given their new parent company’s significant manufacturing, marketing, and sales resources.

This week, multinational bank BBVA announced that it had signed a deal to integrate its cross-border payment and financing services in Ant Group's blockchain platform for global trade, Trusple.  This announcement follows the launch of Trusple last year by Ant Group, which is a blockchain platform that aims to make it easier for SMEs to sell goods around the world while reducing both their costs, as well as costs for financial institutions.

Verizon has announced that Google Messages will be introduced as the default RCS application on all Android devices purchased from the carrier in 2022.

Verizon Communications is a broadband and telecommunications provider in the US, offering a suite of wireless, Internet, TV, and phone services. Based in New York, Verizon is considered one of the top three network operators in North America, alongside AT&T and T-Mobile.

Google is a multinational technology company specialising in Internet-based services, with more than 70 offices across 50 countries. Google Messages is an application developed for Android devices which is capable of supporting various messaging formats, including instant messaging, RCS (Rich Communications Services) and SMS.
