Identity and access management (IAM) is essentially the security discipline that enables individuals, devices, and non-human identities to access the right resources, at the right time, and for the right reasons. At enterprise level, IAM encompasses the management of the user lifecycle, from onboarding and authentication through to changes in access and eventual offboarding. It ensures that users are who they claim to be, while providing secure and efficient access to the resources they need.

Secure user access plays a critical role in the exchange of data and information. This is particularly important as data becomes increasingly valuable to organisations; providing operational, analytical, and strategic insights. However, securing investment in IAM projects can be challenging, as their benefits do not always translate directly into increased profitability, or visible improvements to end-user functionality. Nevertheless, weak IAM can create significant operational and compliance risks, while increasing an organisation’s wider security exposure.

Despite these challenges, IAM remains a growing area of investment. In 2026, Juniper Research forecasts that global spending on IAM will reach $26.2 billion, rising to $40.5 billion by 2031.

About the Infographic

The infographic illustrates how organisations of different sizes are investing in identity and access management. The data shows that large businesses will account for the largest share of IAM spending, with investment increasing from $14.2 billion in 2026 to $23.2 billion in 2031.

Small and medium-sized businesses are also expected to increase their IAM spending steadily, although from significantly lower starting points. By 2031, small businesses are forecast to spend approximately $10.8 billion, while medium-sized businesses are expected to spend around $6.5 billion.

Overall, the figures demonstrate that IAM adoption is expanding across organisations of all sizes. However, large enterprises will remain the highest-value segment of the IAM market; reflecting the scale, complexity, and security requirements of their environments.
