As we discuss in our latest research, wholesale roaming revenue is forecasted to surge from $11 billion in 2025 to a staggering $26.7 billion by 2029; an increase of 142% over the next five years.

The primary catalyst for this growth will be advancements in connectivity, particularly the rollout of 5G Standalone (SA) roaming networks. These innovations will offer a seamless experience similar to consumers' home networks, boosting data roaming usage across multiple devices. Real-time roaming analytics and APIs will also play a crucial role in enabling this smoother experience.

The rise of IoT devices is another key factor. With more IoT devices coming online, Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) are positioned to capture new roaming revenue streams. However, to maximize this opportunity, MNOs must ensure accurate billing and charging, especially given the high data demands of many IoT devices. Implementing Billing and Charging Evolution (BCE) will be crucial to avoid unexpected costs for consumers.

Africa & Middle East and Latin America will see the most significant gains, fueled by increasing smartphone penetration and the growing demand for mobile data. As these regions expand their connectivity infrastructure, MNOs will need to adjust roaming pricing strategies to prevent subscribers from seeking alternatives for international coverage.

With 5G and IoT driving roaming growth, MNOs must act quickly to capitalize on the rising demand and ensure they’re equipped to handle the shift in global data usage patterns.
