Accounts Payable (AP) is the process by which a business pays outstanding invoices for goods and services, and forms a core part of almost all businesses’ procurement strategy. AP comprises several processes that have traditionally been executed manually but present the potential for automation. AP automation can save time by streamlining the payment process, comparing manual and automated approaches across different stages.

Hence, more and more businesses are moving towards automating these processes. Our infographic shows the revenue AP automation vendors are generating from different-sized businesses. We have split businesses by size into small, medium-sized, and large businesses.

About the Infographic

The chart illustrates projected total revenue from AP automation solutions from 2026 to 2031, segmented by client business size.

It indicates a consistent upward trend in total revenue throughout the forecast period; reflecting the growing demand for AP automation solutions across businesses of all different sizes.

Small businesses represent a substantial share of the projected revenue, with their contribution increasing steadily over the period. Revenue from this segment rises from approximately $5,072 million in 2026 to around $6,608 million in 2031.

This growth suggests that smaller organisations are increasingly recognising the potential benefits of automating the AP process, which include reducing manual workloads, improving payment accuracy, and streamlining invoice management. As automation solutions become more accessible, small businesses may have greater opportunities to adopt these technologies and improve operational efficiency.

Large businesses also demonstrate steady revenue growth; increasing their contribution from approximately $4,615 million in 2026 to around $6,141 million by 2031. Medium-sized businesses account for the smallest share throughout the forecast period, with revenue rising gradually from approximately $993.7 thousand to $1,276 million.

Taken together, these trends indicate that demand for AP automation solutions is expected to expand across all three business segments. However, the chart's vertical axis is labelled in millions of dollars, and the figures should be interpreted cautiously as the precise values are not explicitly labelled.

Overall, the projections suggest continued market growth, with small and large businesses representing the most significant revenue contributors.
