Travel SIMs and eSIMs are a convenient solution for international travelers seeking cost-effective connectivity abroad. While traditional SIM cards are physical components that can inserted or and removed from smartphones and other devices, eSIMs are embedded within devices through software installed on an eUICC chip.

As shown in the above infographic, Juniper Research projects significant growth in the travel SIM and eSIM market. This expansion is attributed to increasing numbers of international travelers, forecasted to rise from 1.3 billion in 2024 to 1.6 billion in 2028.

The market growth is further driven by the convenience and familiarity of travel eSIMs. Compared to traditional SIM cards, eSIMs eliminate the need for physical swapping, enabling seamless activation and connectivity. Additionally, rising roaming costs are incentivising consumers to seek out alternative solutions for staying connected while traveling, making competitive pricing and partnerships essential for travel SIM and eSIM vendors.

One limitation to the growth of the travel eSIM market is the lack of consumer awareness of eSIM technology. Therefore, travel eSIM vendors must form strategic partnerships that will help to increase the awareness of travel eSIM products, for instance, by building partnerships with travel operators and airlines – who are in a position to offer travel SIMs and eSIMs as an ancillary product, in the same way that they may offer car rentals.
