Breaking Down Operator 5G Service Revenue in 2024: What, Where & How?
Our latest research predicts that operators will generate $400 billion in service revenue from 5G networks in 2024, with the vast majority of this being derived from the provision of consumer 5G services.
However, as 5G penetration increases among consumers, it is vital that operators prioritise services that provide value to enterprise IoT users. The launch of API-based initiatives such as CAMARA and the GSMA Open Gateway will help this ambition considerably, enabling operators to launch cloud-based services that monetise enterprise traffic.
The advent of 5G Advanced and 5G RedCap will also have a positive impact on the ability of operators to attract high-spending IoT users.
5G Advanced is the next evolutionary stage of 5G. It is set to unlock new opportunities for service providers and will strengthen 5G support for XR (Extended Reality) including cloud gaming, virtual reality, and augmented reality. In addition to this, AI and machine learning will be a key component of 5G advanced systems, to improve network performance.
Likewise, RedCap is an emerging 5G standard that will leverage 5G network standards to provide high data rates, extended battery life, and low latency to specific use cases across the IoT space. Outlined in the 3GPP's R17 specification, this service will provide operators with a platform to compete with other connectivity technologies outside of the telecommunications ecosystem.
Both these services will enable operators to deliver extended coverage, increased network efficiency and device battery life to enterprise users – and indeed, these services are why we expect operator revenue from enterprise 5G services to climb 547% from 2024 to 2028, compared to just 55% for consumer 5G revenue over the same period.
