Why Monetising Programmable Voice is Vital for Operators

Telecoms & Connectivity

Programmable voice is the ability to make, control, receive, and monitor calls via voice API software. Voice APIs not only enable applications to connect to carrier networks, but also enable the app in use to control the carrier service to perform a number of voice operator services, including call recording and audio conferencing.

As we discuss in our latest mobile voice research, these APIs allow developers to programmatically control a carrier network without having to interact directly with the PSTN. The ability to utilise programmable voice is important in today’s technology market, as the use of multi channel programmable communications is increasing, with enterprises wanting to provide a more engaging experience for their customers. This is as voice APIs allow enterprises the flexibility to quickly integrate new communications channels and technologies without the need to invest in extensive telecom infrastructure and expertise.

Furthermore, voice APIs facilitate effective collaboration, customers' engagement and service through the integration of applications and workflows. As a result, enterprises can improve internal efficiencies and value for their end-users, meaning voice APIs will become increasingly important to enterprises.

The development of voice APIs is expected to be accelerated by the GSMA Open Gateway Initiative. The open-source publishing of Open Gateway APIs in Camara will open up voice APIs to developers, allowing for expanded experimentation of uses and innovation. Furthermore, developers and cloud providers will be able to deploy services more quickly across operator networks through the creation of single points of access. This will allow the easy integration of new APIs, enabling mobile voice operators to quickly integrate new technologies. The development and integration of new voice APIs will create a growing market, which will fuel improvements in the services provided by mobile voice vendors.

Juniper Research believes that MNOs must make the monetisation of these APIs a priority, as their customisable nature allows enterprises to maximise the value they provide. In order to further expand revenue from these services, MNOs must also look to develop APIs with specific use cases in mind, as this will allow premium prices to be charged to enterprises.
