Telco Insights - India’s 5G Spectrum Auction Delayed Until Second Half of 2022

November 2021
Telecoms & Connectivity

The Department of Telecommunications in India has agreed to operator requests for an extension of 5G trials. As a result, the country’s 5G spectrum auction has been pushed to the second half of 2022, with commercial launches not expected until late 2022 or early 2023.

This announcement extends the Indian Government’s allocation of 3.5 Ghz, 26 Ghz and 700 Mhz spectrum to Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea in May 2021, which was due to conclude in November 2021. These three privately-owned operators, alongside state-run MTNL (Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited), will continue with 5G trials until the second half of 2022, when the country’s 5G spectrum auction has been scheduled.
