Telco Insights - Google to Launch RCS-Capable Messaging Client within Android

Google has announced that they will enable mobile subscribers in the UK and France to opt into RCS rather than waiting for their carrier to support the messaging technology. Previously, a mobile subscriber would have needed to be using an RCS-enabled smartphone and subscribe to an operator who supported the messaging technology. This move by Google is aimed at accelerating the growth of RCS-enabled subscribers through mitigating the need for an RCS-capable operator.

A group of 10 Democrat state attorneys general earlier this week filed to block the high-profile merger of T-Mobile and Sprint. This action comes shortly after the merger had been given the green light by the head of the Federal Communications Commission.

The Justice Department is expected to issue a decision in the next few weeks. While the lawsuit is unlikely to stop the merger, it can significantly delay it, with the schedule now being in the hands of courts, instead of federal regulators.

On June 6th 2019, Cisco announced its intentions to acquire Sentryo, an IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) cybersecurity company, based in France.

Sentryo specialises in supplying asset visibility and security solutions for industrial control systems and networks. The acquisition is planned to be completed by the end of Cisco’s Q1 fiscal year 2020 (October 26, 2019).

Visa announced the commercial launch of Visa B2B Connect network, which will connect financial institutions; giving them the ability to process high-value B2B payments globally in a quick and secure fashion. The launch will cover over 30 global trade corridors. The company aims to expand it to 90 corridors by the end of the year.

Facebook acquired WhatsApp in 2014 for a reported $19 billion. Historically the founders of WhatsApp, Jan Koum and Brian Acton, opposed the introduction of advertising in the messaging app in favour of sustaining the user experience.

There is increasing speculation that Facebook is poised to launch its own cryptocurrency in 2020.

Reports from media outlets, including the BBC and the Wall Street Journal, suggest that a team led by former PayPal president and Coinbase director David Marcus, has been building an asset-based cryptocurrency, known internally as ‘GlobalCoin’. It is believed that the cryptocurrency will initially be introduced in around a dozen countries during Q1 2020.

IBM announced last week that its Blockchain World Wire is officially accessible; offering payment in 72 countries, 47 currencies and 44 banking endpoints. Blockchain World Wire is a real-time global payments network for regulated financial institutions, including bank and non-bank institutions.
