A variety of African governments have been introducing legislation that will impact the very successful mobile money services markets.

In particular, there have been moves to counteract Safaricom’s dominance in Kenya, as well as several countries introducing a variety of new taxes and KYC (Know Your Customer) requirements on mobile money transactions, the most punitive of which are in Zimbabwe. These restrictions will reshape the mobile money landscape as it stands, with Nigeria a likely winner in the short term.

Fossil has announced the fifth generation of its Wear OS smartwatch, the Gen 5. This is the first Wear OS watch that will be able to take calls from a tethered iPhone. However, this functionality will not be available on the release date.

Gen 5 uses Fossil's design strategy to merge technology with classic watch design. It provides improved battery life and a swim-proof speaker that allows users to play music and hear responses from Google Assistant and answer calls.

Swedish start-up Klarna has now become Europe’s most valuable private fintech company and the sixth in the world, after raising $460 million in funding.

This equity funding was led by San Francisco Dragoneer Investment Group alongside BlackRock and Commonwealth Bank of Australia; bringing the total valuation of the company to $5.5 billion.

Apple is reportedly interested in purchasing the chipset division, including staff and development, of Intel’s 5G modems.

This is despite Apple agreeing to use Qualcomm’s chipset for at least the next 6 years as part of a settlement revolving around patent licensing. At present, Intel’s sole customer in the sector is Apple itself.

On Monday 22nd July, Robinhood announced $323 million Series E financing, with the company now valued at $7.6 billion.

The funding was led by DST Global, with participation from other investors including Ribbit Capital, NEA, Sequoia, and Thrive Capital. Robinhood says it plans to employ the funding to continue ‘democratising finance for all’.

Waymo, Google’s self-driving venture now operated under umbrella company Alphabet, has been given permission by California regulators to transport passengers in vehicles that leverage its autonomous driving system.

The CPUC (California Public Utilities Commission) granted Waymo a permit on Tuesday to participate in the state’s Autonomous Vehicle Passenger Service pilot.

Vodafone launched its 5G services into its first round of UK cities, and introduced a speed-based pricing model. The speed-based contracts are not just for 5G-capable phones and contracts, hinting at a new pricing model for the company.

In addition, the company announced free 5G roaming (currently only available in select regions of Germany, Italy and Spain), in addition to a 5G mobile broadband box, the 5G Gigacube. This is being positioned as a broadband replacement service.

Start-up Remitly, a digital money transfer specialist, has announced that it has raised $220 million in funding to boost its money transfer services and invest in new opportunities in financial services.

This round was Remitly’s biggest round of funding to date and was composed of $135 million in equity financing, led by Generation, co-founded by Al Gore, and $85 million in debt. This funding has resulted in the company now being valued to close to $1 billion; considerably raising the profile of the start-up. Remitly is now more on par with competitor WorldRemit, which raised $175 million last month.

On Tuesday 18th June 2019, Facebook announced the Libra cryptocurrency, backed by several impressive partners including Uber, eBay, PayPal, Spotify, Visa, and Mastercard.

Libra is intended to enable simple payments, particularly in the P2P and cross-border arenas. There is also a goal to empower the financially excluded to make payments digitally; bringing them into the wider economy.
