Chatbots are computer programmes which utilise technology designed to simulate conversational interactions with human users. These interactions may also include automated processes, such as eCommerce transactions, hence providing a beneficial, and potentially profitable channel, for businesses.

Google has announced partnerships with Audi and Volvo to deliver Android as a complete in-vehicle OS (operating system) that does not require smartphone tethering. The first iteration of the system acted only as the HMI (Human Machine Interface) layer on top of the vehicle’s native OS, provided by the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) or a third party. The smartphone application was updated in November 2016 to enable the use of the smartphone screen in replacement of a dedicated head-unit.

The value of Bitcoin has soared recently, with the value of the cryptocurrency exceeding $1,800 for the first time on Thursday, 11th May.

Since the end of April, Bitcoin’s price has increased by 40%, adding a further $7.5 billion to its market capitalisation in just 11 days.

A report released by the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung this week has revealed that known vulnerabilities in the SS7 (Signalling System No 7) protocol have been exploited by thieves in order to bypass security measures implemented by banks in order to prevent identity or account theft. This led to a series attacks with the aim of stealing money from victims’ bank accounts.

Mastercard this week unveiled its next generation biometric card, combining chip technology with fingerprints to conveniently and safely verify the cardholder’s identity for in-store purchases. Facebook have announced that they have enabled P2P (peer-to-peer) payments in group chats over Messenger. Since March 2015, the OTT (over-the-top) messaging application has enabled payments over one-toone conversations. At present the service is only available to Android and Desktop users in the US, however it is inevitable that the service will be rolled out to iOS users in the US imminently, before service launches occur in other regions.

Vodafone, a major proponent of the 3GPP’s NB-IoT (Narrowband IoT) standard, has recently announced that its commercial roll-out of the technology in Ireland and the Netherlands has been delayed until the summer. The operator had anticipated to launch its service by the end of March; but has now suggested that its customers were ‘not ready’ for the NB-IoT launch.
