Bitcoin’s value has continued to rise in the wake of the currency’s hard fork on 1st August, with one Bitcoin worth nearly $4,200 as of Thursday, 24th August.

Since the fork, which resulted in the creation of a new cryptocurrency, Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin has increased in value by nearly 50%, with daily transaction values regularly exceeding $1 billion.

Alphabet has announced the acquisition of AI (artificial intelligence) start-up, AIMatter. The company is a developer of AI image recognition software, currently deployed in its selfie app, Fabby. The app currently has between 100,000 and 500,000 downloads on Android. The terms of the deal are undisclosed, however it is understood that AIMatter employees will move to Alphabet as part of the deal. The acquistion follows Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai’s announcement at the Google I/O conference in May of Google Lens, an image recognition feature built into Google Assistant and Google Photos.

Juniper Insights - Baidu Announces More than 50 Partners for Autonomous Driving Development Platform

Chinese Web service provider, Baidu, has announced that over 50 partners have joined its autonomous vehicle platform, Apollo. Companies that have signed up to the venture include Ford, Daimler, NVIDIA, Intel, Microsoft, Velodyne and Continental. Unlike other autonomous development plans, Apollo is open source and will provide third party developers with tools including APIs (application programming interfaces), data and sample hardware to accelerate the time in which the platform can deliver an autonomous vehicle to market.

Google has been fined €2.42 billion ($2.75 billion) by the EC (European Commission) for abusing its dominance as a search engine, by giving an illegal advantage to its own comparison shopping service. 

The fine is the EC’s largest to date against any company accused of market distortion.

Google has announced partnerships with Audi and Volvo to deliver Android as a complete in-vehicle OS (operating system) that does not require smartphone tethering. The first iteration of the system acted only as the HMI (Human Machine Interface) layer on top of the vehicle’s native OS, provided by the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) or a third party. The smartphone application was updated in November 2016 to enable the use of the smartphone screen in replacement of a dedicated head-unit.
