Ericsson has announced that it has agreed to acquire Vonage for $6.2 billion. Ericsson is a network vendor and telecommunications provider based in Stockholm, Sweden. In September 2020, Ericsson acquired Cradlepoint, a US-based market leader in Wireless WAN Edge 4G and 5G solutions for the enterprise which brings wireless connectivity solutions for fixed/temporary services and IoT devices to create new revenue opportunities for mobile operator customers. The landmark partnership is expected to accelerate the adoption of the company’s 5G and Wireless WAN solutions.

B2B banking service provider Thought Machine has secured a $200 million Series C funding round and has announced that it has reached unicorn status; passing a $1 billion valuation. The funding was led by Nyca Partners with other investors including ING Ventures, JPMorgan Chase Strategic Investments and Standard Chartered Ventures. The financing has been earmarked for further development and expansion of Vault as well as expansion of its international reach and targeting growth opportunities in new markets.

The Department of Telecommunications in India has agreed to operator requests for an extension of 5G trials. As a result, the country’s 5G spectrum auction has been pushed to the second half of 2022, with commercial launches not expected until late 2022 or early 2023.

On the 12th November, Peloton filed a lawsuit against fitness technology rivals iFIT and Echelon; claiming many of their products are in violation of its patent relating to on-demand fitness classes with live leaderboards. In addition to damages, Peloton is seeking an injunction to stop the use of the technology it claims violates its patents.

Infobip has announced it will acquire Peerless Network, a US-based VoIP provider. The agreement is subject to regulatory approvals and likely to be completed in 2022. Infobip shares and cash will finance the transaction. Founded in 2006, Infobip is a telecommunications and IP platform provider that specialises in A2P SMS, RCS, voice, email, push notifications and chat applications (including WhatsApp, Viber, LINE, Facebook Messenger, and Telegram). Infobip presently supports the transmission of more than 8 billion messages monthly, representing approximately 5% of the global addressable A2P market.

Announced at its Facebook Connect conference, Facebook is rebranding as Meta, to avoid confusion between the company and its main product. This is a continuation of its efforts in 2019 to differentiate the company from the product, as well as an attempt to reposition itself as more than a social media company. This has also come at a time when the company is investing more than $10 billion a year into research and product development of the metaverse, understood as an online platform where multiple forms of services can be accessed; typically through a virtual or augmented reality environment.

The PWG (President’s Working Group on Financial Markets), the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) and the OCC (Office of the Comptroller of the Currency) have released a joint report outlining the potential for increased use of stablecoins and the need for appropriate oversight to minimise risks to users and the broader economy. The report adds that current oversight is disjointed, with some stablecoins effectively falling outside the regulatory perimeter. Their increased use in payments is presenting concerns around the potential for destabilising runs, disruptions in the payment system, and concentration of economic power.

Telco Insights - Ericsson and Deutsche Telekom Successfully Demonstrate On-demand 5G Network Slicing

Deutsche Telekom and Ericsson have successfully completed trials demonstrating the provision of ‘on demand’ 5G video services to customers via end-to-end network slicing. This proof of concept was developed in Deutsche Telekom’s Bonn-based laboratory, using Ericsson’s commercial-grade 5G SA (Standalone) network to implement end‑to‑end network slicing infrastructure and explore the benefits of 5G network slicing for enterprises. During this trial, enterprise customers specialising in video production services were able to choose between low and high resolution for broadcasted video content, based on performance quality needs.
