Last week, Brazilian digital-only bank Nubank announced that it had raised $750 million in funding; an extension to its Series G funding, which raised $400 million in January 2021. The funding round was led by Berkshire Hathaway, which invested $500 million under the round. This takes Nubank’s total funding to $2.3 billion since inception, which takes it to the upper limits of fintech funding to date.

This week, technology provider Ericsson announced that it was launching Ericsson Private 5G, a new private cellular 4G and 5G network designed to service the manufacturing, mining and process industry, offshore and power utilities, ports and airport markets. Ericsson Private 5G features cloud-based network management and can be installed within hours at any facility, with applications including digital twins and asset tracking named as specific areas for its use.

Wejo has announced that it will go public via a reverse merger with Virtuoso Acquisition Corp. This deal values Wejo, an automotive data provider that has partnerships with automakers including GM and Hyundai, at $800 million and is expected to deliver approximately $330 million of gross proceeds.

Global money transfer platform provider Paysend has raised $125 million in Series B funding, led by One Peak with participation from Infravia Growth Capital, Hermes GPE Innovation Fund, and Plug and Play. Paysend is said to be planning to use the funding to expand its global operations, as well as accelerating product innovation within cross-border payments. This follows a funding round of $20 million in July 2018, leading to an estimated value for the company at around $720 million.

Following Telenor’s announcement of its SA (standalone) 5G solution in April 2021, Enea has been onboarded as the latest addition to Telenor’s multi-vendor initiative. The Telenor Group is a Norwegian state-owned multinational telecommunications company, providing mobile and fixed-line communications, as well as TV services. The group has mobile operations in Asia and Europe, with a significant presence in the Nordics. Based in Sweden, Enea is a software provider specialising in cloud-native and 5G-enabled products. Notably, Enea offers an end-to-end product portfolio that covers the network from the edge to the core.

Hearing aid maker Sonova has announced it is acquiring Sennheiser’s consumer audio division for €200 million ($243 million). According to Sanova, the acqusition has been driven by a desire ‘to reach ever more consumers, wherever their journey towards better hearing begins.’

This week, open banking infrastructure provider Tink announced that it was acquiring Fintecsystems (FTS), a leading German open banking provider. The terms of the deal were undisclosed, with 65 FTS members expected to join Tink. The acquisition is targeted at boosting Tink’s dominance within the open banking space in Europe, with Fintecsystems’ strong capabilities. FTS specialises in data analytics, digital account checks, account aggregation, and open banking payments, with customers including N26, DKB, Santander, Solarisbank, and Check24. FTS covers 99% of banks in the DACH region. Tink also claimed that around 75% of all online credit decisions in Germany are processed by FTS.

Verizon has announced that it will sell its media group to private equity group Apollo Global Management, for a total value of $5 billion. Verizon acquired AOL for $4.4 billion in 2017, and this was followed by the acquisition of Yahoo for $4.5 billion in 2019. As part of the agreement, Verizon will retain a 10% stake in the media group which includes brands such as TechCrunch, Engadget and Yahoo Finance. The deal is expected to conclude in the second half of 2021.

Uber has entered into a partnership with electric vehicle manufacturer Arrival. This partnership will see Arrival produce an electric vehicle, dubbed the ‘Arrival Car;’ specifically designed for rideshare drivers. ‘We are confident that electrifying ride-hailing vehicles will have an outsized impact on cities, and we are keen to support drivers as they manage this transition,’ says Arrival SVP Tom Elvidge. ‘Arrival Car will be designed around drivers’ needs to create a vehicle that is affordable, durable and desirable [and] the best possible product for ride hailing that elevates the experience of the passenger and improves drivers’ health, safety and finances.’

Fintech Insights - Digital Dollar Project to Launch Pilot Programmes

The Digital Dollar Project is a not-for-profit partnership established to promote research and public discussion about a US CBDC and plans to release the findings from these pilots for both policy consideration by Congress and for use in academic study. It was recently announced that the project is to launch five pilot programmes in the coming year, to examine use cases for a potential US CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currency). The pilots, initially funded by Accenture, will measure the value of, and inform the future design of a US ‘digital dollar’ and provide a broad analysis of the benefits and challenges presented by the use of the ‘digital dollar’.
