Eko, a digital cardiopulmonary start-up based in Oakland, California, announced this week that it had successfully closed a $30 million extension to its Series C; which was initially completed in November 2020 and saw the company receive over $65 million from investors, including Highland Capital Partners, Questa Capital, Artis Ventures, and DigiTx Partners.

EPI (the European Payments Initiative) has given up on its effort to build a rival to Mastercard and Visa in Europe after more than half of its members left. Founded in 2020, EPI aims to create a unified payment solution tailored for Europe. It was initially backed by 31 major European banks and acquirers, such as Worldline and Nets. Recently, 20 banks have withdrawn, including all Spanish members, as well as Germany’s Commerzbank and DZ Bank.

Rocket Health, a telemedicine and last-mile healthcare provider based in Uganda, announced this week that it had successfully raised $5 million in Series A funding, in an investment round led by Creadev and supported by existing early-stage investors Grenfell Holdings and LoftyInc Capital Management.

Through its Privacy Sandbox project, Google has announced that it is extending the limit of data tracking to Android apps further to Chrome. Google plans to phase out cookies, used to track users’ browsing history, to create an ecosystem of targeted ads. Google has now announced that this will now be extended to apps over Google-owned Android mobile OS. However, these changes will not be implemented for two years.

Zoomo, a start-up offering eBikes to gig workers and couriers, announced this week that it had successfully raised an additional $20 million in Series B funding. The investment round was led by Collaborative Fund and was supported by Mitsubishi UFJ, SG Fleet, WIND Ventures, and Akuna Capital. This contribution brings the total amount raised by Zoomo at Series B to $80 million, with a total $100 million in funding raised by the company since its founding in 2017.

In February 2022, Tingo, a Nigerian Fintech focusing on agriculture, was reported to be looking to raise $500 million to expand its services across Africa. According to its CEO, Tingo is raising a combination of debt and equity financing through a private placement. After the recent ban of Huawei 5G infrastructure, telecommunications operators in the US have submitted a request for $5.6 billion in funding from the FFC (Federal Communications Commission). In 2020, it was announced that network operators across a number of countries worldwide, including the US and UK, would be banned from purchasing and using Huawei 5G equipment in its infrastructure after December 2020. This ban was due to a potential risk in national security.
