Verizon has announced that it will sell its media group to private equity group Apollo Global Management, for a total value of $5 billion. Verizon acquired AOL for $4.4 billion in 2017, and this was followed by the acquisition of Yahoo for $4.5 billion in 2019. As part of the agreement, Verizon will retain a 10% stake in the media group which includes brands such as TechCrunch, Engadget and Yahoo Finance. The deal is expected to conclude in the second half of 2021.

Uber has entered into a partnership with electric vehicle manufacturer Arrival. This partnership will see Arrival produce an electric vehicle, dubbed the ‘Arrival Car;’ specifically designed for rideshare drivers. ‘We are confident that electrifying ride-hailing vehicles will have an outsized impact on cities, and we are keen to support drivers as they manage this transition,’ says Arrival SVP Tom Elvidge. ‘Arrival Car will be designed around drivers’ needs to create a vehicle that is affordable, durable and desirable [and] the best possible product for ride hailing that elevates the experience of the passenger and improves drivers’ health, safety and finances.’

The Digital Dollar Project is a not-for-profit partnership established to promote research and public discussion about a US CBDC and plans to release the findings from these pilots for both policy consideration by Congress and for use in academic study. It was recently announced that the project is to launch five pilot programmes in the coming year, to examine use cases for a potential US CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currency). The pilots, initially funded by Accenture, will measure the value of, and inform the future design of a US ‘digital dollar’ and provide a broad analysis of the benefits and challenges presented by the use of the ‘digital dollar’.

18 months after the CCMI (Cross Carrier Messaging Initiative) was announced, AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon have decided to end their initiative to promote RCS within the US. Announced in October 2019, the CCMI was a joint venture between AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile US, and Verizon which aimed to deliver a new interoperable messaging application based on the GSMA’s RCS (Rich Communications Services) communication protocol. Whilst the CCMI was initially focused on the US market, it was envisioned that the operator-led application would eventually become available worldwide.

Microsoft has announced that it is acquiring communications software specialist Nuance for $19.7 billion in cash. The announcement highlights that Nuance’s focus in healthcare is intended to extend Microsoft’s presence in the healthcare space with a further play into services for the EHR segment, alongside the services it already provides to many healthcare providers through Azure.

This week, card network Mastercard announced that it was acquiring Ekata, a digital identity verification company for $850 million. The acquisition is targeted to boost Mastercard’s presence in the digital identity space, which has been an ever-greater focus in recent years. Mastercard highlighted the combination of Ekata’s identity verification data, machine-learning technology and global experience as transformative, when combined with Mastercard’s fraud prevention and digital identity programmes.

This week Canadian eCommerce company Shopify is continuing to expand its areas of interest. Shopify is entering the online grocery sector, through the launch of a new e-commerce app, which will enable retailers subscribed to Shopify to add groceries to their offerings. The app is claimed to be a one-of-a-kind feature designed by supplier GreenDropShip. Shopify’s core business is centred around creating platforms for small start-up companies to make their own online business. This is then supplemented by offering sales processing tools, and Shopify brand hardware and software for its users.

Etisalat announces its intention to partner with Rakuten Mobile, in order to develop an OpenRAN-based network architecture capable of supporting virtualised network functionalities. The Etisalat Group is a leading telecommunications service provider based in the UAE, which provides network services to 149 million subscribers across Africa and the Middle East. Rakuten Mobile is a Japanese mobile network operator and a fully-owned subsidiary of Rakuten, which also offers MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) functionalities.
