Zoomo, a start-up offering eBikes to gig workers and couriers, announced this week that it had successfully raised an additional $20 million in Series B funding. The investment round was led by Collaborative Fund and was supported by Mitsubishi UFJ, SG Fleet, WIND Ventures, and Akuna Capital. This contribution brings the total amount raised by Zoomo at Series B to $80 million, with a total $100 million in funding raised by the company since its founding in 2017.

In February 2022, Tingo, a Nigerian Fintech focusing on agriculture, was reported to be looking to raise $500 million to expand its services across Africa. According to its CEO, Tingo is raising a combination of debt and equity financing through a private placement. Tingo is also in talks with the New York Stock Exchange to list there in the first half of 2022 with an IPO.

After the recent ban of Huawei 5G infrastructure, telecommunications operators in the US have submitted a request for $5.6 billion in funding from the FFC (Federal Communications Commission). In 2020, it was announced that network operators across a number of countries worldwide, including the US and UK, would be banned from purchasing and using Huawei 5G equipment in its infrastructure after December 2020. This ban was due to a potential risk in national security.

In early February, Apple announced that it was introducing Tap to Pay on iPhone. This will enable millions of US-based merchants to use their iPhones to accept Apple Pay, contactless credit and debit cards, and other digital wallets. This is achieved through a simple tap to their iPhone, with no additional hardware or payment terminal needed. Apple confirmed that Tap to Pay on iPhone will be available for payment platforms and app developers to integrate into their iOS apps and offer as an acceptance option to their business customers.

Vodafone UK has announced that it will begin to retire its legacy 3G network in 2023, in order to improve 4G and 5G services through the repurposing of spectrum. With less than 4% of data on Vodafone’s network being transmitted by 3G, the operator has announced that it will begin its network modernisation programme in 2023. This programme will phase out 3G coverage; resulting in enhanced 4G and 5G services being deployed across the UK.

This builds upon Vodafone’s announcement that it will invest over $5 billion into cellular IoT services and edge computing services. It announced that its IoT platform has over 10,000 enterprise customers.

In early January 2022, PayPal confirmed reports from Bloomberg that it was exploring the launch of its own stablecoin, as part of its broader cryptocurrency push. This followed evidence of the move being discovered within the company’s iPhone app, with the potential stablecoin being called PayPal Coin.
