More than 5 million transactions across Europe failed during Visa's 10 hour outage between 1st and 2nd June 2018, with 10% of all attempted transactions during the period failing. The failure has been explained in a letter to a UK parliamentary committee as a failure of a network switch, compounded by a lack of software to initiate failover.

Amazon has secured a TV rights package enabling it to stream live EPL (English Premier League) football, ending the long-standing duopoly between Sky and BT.

Under the deal, which runs between 2019 and 2022, Amazon acquired Package F, meaning it can show 20 games per season, comprised of 10 games from one Bank Holiday and one midweek fixture programme.

Amazon has said that the games will be available free of charge to Amazon Prime subscribers.
The value of the deal has not yet been disclosed.

Digital payments leader PayPal has announced that it will acquire Swedish fintech start-up iZettle for $2.2 billion. iZettle provides mobile card readers and other digital payment products to small-medium businesses in Europe, Brazil and Mexico.

iZettle supports nearly 500,000 customers and expects to generate $165 million in revenue in 2018. It processes about $6 billion on its platform. The acquisition is expected to be finalised by the end of Q3 2018.

Amazon continues to scale up its activities in the underdeveloped US groceries space. In May 2018, the company confirmed that its Whole Foods Market subsidiary would launch a loyalty programme offering discounts to Amazon Prime customers.

The discounts will include 10% off all Whole Foods’ sale items, together with ‘weekly deep discounts’ on selected special items. They will initially apply to Amazon Prime members who visit Whole Foods’ stores in Florida, but will be rolled out to all US Whole Foods Market and Whole Foods Market 365 stores by the end of the summer.
