Fintech Insights - Facebook Unveils WhatsApp, Marketplace Payments

May 2019

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has confirmed during Facebook’s F8 developer conference in San Jose that the company will launch mobile payments on its WhatsApp platform across several countries later in 2019.

The system is currently in beta in India, where it has around 1 million users.

At the event, Zuckerberg also announced that in the US, Facebook would be integrating its payments offering with Marketplace, its Gumtree-style online classifieds service.

Mastercard announced enhancements to its Smart Data tool solution that provides detail of business expenses; allowing users to see more detailed transaction data concerning their B2B expenses via Amazon Business transactions.

The product is currently available to mid and large-sized business in the UK, Germany and US for Mastercard commercial cards issued by Bank of America, Merrill Lynch, Barclays Bank PLC, Citi, JP Morgan, Lloyds Bank, NatWest and The Royal Bank of Scotland.

IoT Insights - Apple Settles Major Patent Dispute with Qualcomm

Apple and chip supplier Qualcomm began a 5-week jury trial on Monday, in a case that would have potentially seen Apple receive up to $27 billion in damages, while having substantial repercussions across the industry.

On Wednesday, it was announced that Apple had reached an agreement outside of court with Qualcomm, with the former’s modem supplier announcing its exit from the 5G smartphone modem market with virtually identical timing.

In 2018, Juniper estimated the volume of B2B cross-border transactions at nearly 13.5 billion, a figure which is expected to increase to more than 16.8 billion by 2030.

Telco Insights - SK Telecom to Launch Commercial 5G Network This Week

SK Telecom has announced that they plan to launch its commercial 5G networks this week on April 5th, 2019. This signifies the first launch of a 5G service that complies to 3GPP 5G standards. The network operator has already rolled out 34,000 5G base stations across South Korea in densely populated areas across 85 cities including Seoul. SK Telecom claim that the network can reach speeds up to 2.7 Gbps.

On 27th March 2019, Adobe, Microsoft and SAP stated additional details to their ODI (Open Data Initiative), an initiative which originally launched in September 2018. The ODI is a collaborative approach by all three organisations aimed to help companies to:

Facilitate intelligent decision making via the collection and analysis of their data from a variety of disparate, internal silos.
Enable their customers to smoothly migrate data between each other’s services via a standardised, common data format.
Improve and enhance their customer interactions through real-time insights retrieved from the cloud.

Telco Insights - SK Telecom & Deutsche Telekom to Collaborate on Blockchain ID

March 2019

Deutsche Telekom and SK Telecom announced that they will partner to create, and eventually commercialise, a blockchain-based identification and verification system to simplify authentication processes.

The 2 mobile network operators signed a memorandum of understanding officialising their partnership at this year’s MWC.
