Telco Insights - SK Telecom Completes End-to-End 5G Standalone Test with Ericsson

SK Telecom and Ericsson have announced that the two companies have completed a successful trial of a standalone 5G network. 3GPP standards for standalone 5G networks are anticipated to be finalised in December 2019. As a result, commercialisation of standalone 5G networks will not occur until 2020 at the earliest.

Telco Insights - Avenir Telecom Releases First Energizer-Branded KaiOS Smart Featurephones

Avenir has revealed two Energizer-branded smart featurephones that will be showcased at IFA 2019. The E241 and E241S are 3G and 4G handsets respectively, which run on the KaiOS platform.

They will come with WhatsApp, YouTube, Facebook, Google Assistant, and Google Maps preinstalled, and cost €29.99 ($32.84) and €39.99 ($44.14), although some distributors have already earmarked higher prices for them.

Fintech Insights - Railsbank Raises Funding for South East Asia Expansion

London-based start-up Railsbank announced that it had raised £10 million ($12.1 million) in a Series A funding round, led by Singapore Life, Moneta Capital, CreditEase, Clocktower Technology Ventures and existing investors such as Firestartr.

The funding will be used to expand Railsbank’s reach beyond Europe by focusing on the US, Australia and South East Asia. A new office in Singapore has already opened.

Following an initial December 2017 partnership with Plug and Play in California’s Silicon Valley, Japanese P&C (Property and Casualty) insurer Tokio Marine Holdings has announced a collaboration with Plug and Play’s Singapore insurtech programme.

Swisscom announced the signing of roaming agreements with SK Telecom (South Korea) and Elisa (Finland) for 5G networks.

A variety of African governments have been introducing legislation that will impact the very successful mobile money services markets.

In particular, there have been moves to counteract Safaricom’s dominance in Kenya, as well as several countries introducing a variety of new taxes and KYC (Know Your Customer) requirements on mobile money transactions, the most punitive of which are in Zimbabwe. These restrictions will reshape the mobile money landscape as it stands, with Nigeria a likely winner in the short term.
