Telco Insights - UK Government to Allow Limited Huawei Involvement in Telecommunications Networks

The UK has taken the decision to allow Huawei equipment to be used in 5G networks in the country, albeit in a limited capacity. Huawei will not be allowed in UK operators’ core networks or in any parts of the UK’s critical network infrastructure. The UK Government has placed a restriction that only allows 35% of Huawei’s infrastructure to be used in a single network.

Fintech Insights - N26 Announces Growth to 5 Million Customers; Including 250,000 in the US

German digital bank N26 announced that it has reached 250,000 US customers following its launch on the US market, bringing it to a total of 5 million customers. N26 launched in the US in August 2019 in partnership with California-based Axos Bank; making N26 the first European challenger bank to enter the US market.

Fintech Insights - Visa to Acquire Plaid for $5.3 Billion, Showing Importance of Open Banking

Following a previous strategic investment, Visa announced that it was acquiring US Open Banking start-up Plaid, for $5.3 billion. Visa cited ‘how it enhances the growth trajectory of [its] business’ as a major factor in the decision, claiming also that ‘the acquisition, combined with [its] many fintech efforts already underway, will position Visa to deliver even more value for developers, financial institutions and consumers.’

Vodafone GmbH has acquired Cologne-based IoT solutions provider grandcentrix. The company will remain an independent subsidiary as part of the Vodafone Group, and aid the company’s expansion as a partner in the LPWAN (low power wide area network) space. This also follows the company’s acquisition of German cable operator Unitymedia.

Telco Insights - Telefónica Deutschland Chooses Huawei and Nokia for its 5G Network Rollout

In December 2019, Telefónica Deutschland announced that it had selected Huawei and Nokia as their chosen network vendors for its 5G RAN (radio access network), subject to the suppliers meeting government security standards.

Telco Insights - Syniverse Messaging Server Glitch

November 2019

A message transfer server at messaging platforms provider Syniverse failed on 14th February, and was reactivated on 7th November. Rather than purging older messages, as it typically does, the server sent those old messages to over 168,000 US consumers.
