IoT Insights - Bose Winding Down AR Glasses Initiative

A report from Protocol states that Bose is giving up on its AR glasses technology. While Bose Frames glasses and headphones that supported the technology are still available to buy, there is no direct reference to Bose AR technology itself on Bose’s website any longer. Also new developers have not been able to access the Bose AR SDK since April. Bose AR Glasses reportedly will only provide hearable capabilities, without the directional audio capabilities of Bose AR.

Fintech Insights - European Commission Launches Antitrust Investigation into Apple Pay

This week, the European Commission announced that it had opened a formal antitrust investigation into Apple Pay in the EU; focusing on the terms and conditions for integrating Apple Pay into merchant apps and websites on iPhones and iPads, as well as Apple’s limitation of third-party access to NFC functionality for payments.

The lockdowns prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic mean that services that would normally be accessed in physical locations are now being used remotely.

This has led to a boost in the usage of both telemedicine services and digital therapeutics. The latter is partly in response to the increased mental strain placed on people in lockdown and healthcare providers, along with other wellness products, are also stepping in. For example, wellness app Headspace is providing its service free to healthcare professionals, alongside several resources for all kinds of people during the pandemic.

This week, Bloomberg reported that sources close to the matter have confirmed that Western Union is looking to acquire MoneyGram, in what would be a consolidation of the two largest US money transfer providers. The article claims that a takeover offer has been made but that this is not certain to result in an acquisition.

The UK’s NCSC (National Cyber Security Centre) has announced that it will now reconsider its position on Huawei’s involvement in the country’s 5G networks after the US imposed fresh sanctions on the China-based network vendor. The US has recently imposed restrictions on the use of American designs in any of its equipment.

Following the acquisition of Affirmed Networks in April 2020, Microsoft aims to further develop 5G services by entering in to an agreement to acquire Metaswitch Networks for an undisclosed amount.

IoT Insights - Apple to Acquire VR Streaming Service Provider, NextVR, for $100 Million

Apple has acquired VR (virtual reality) streaming service, NextVR, for a reported $100 million.

VR technology has already been accessed for a number of years by some of Apple’s major competitors, such as Facebook and Samsung. Apple has until now not entered this space to the same extent, historically with a preference instead of AR (augmented reality).

Fintech Insights - Ant Financial to Invest $73.5 Million into Myanmar’s Wave Money

It was reported this week that Alipay affiliate Ant Financial is to invest $73.5 million into mobile financial services provider Wave Money in a bid to boost financial inclusion in Myanmar. The move will make Ant Financial a significant minority stakeholder alongside existing shareholders Norwegian telecoms company, Telenor, and Myanmar’s Yoma Bank.

Telco Insights - Sinch Announces Intention to Acquire SAP’s Communication Platform

Sinch has announced that it has agreed to acquire SAP’s mobile messaging solution suite, SDI (SAP Digital Interconnect). SDI is a cloud-based communication solution that currently has over 1,500 clients globally. As part of the acquisition, Sinch will acquire all IP (intellectual property) and assets that belong to SDI.
