Fintech Insights - Thunes Raises $60 Million to Address New Opportunities in Emerging Markets

B2B cross-border payments provider Thunes has raised $60 million in Series B funding, with the goal of ‘making financial services affordable and accessible to everyone’, according to Thunes' CEO Peter De Caluwe. The funding round was led by Helios Investment Partners, with investment also coming from Checkout.com and existing investors GGV Capital and Future Shape. This new funding brings the total capital raised by the company to $70 million since May 2019.

On 13th August, Epic Games put through an update to its popular game Fortnite that bypassed the in-app purchase mechanism of the Apple App Store and Google Play Stores. This subsequently resulted in the game being banned on both platforms, prompting Epic Games to file a lawsuit alleging the technology companies are monopolies that stifle competition. This was accompanied by a short, released as a Fortnite Premier that parodied Apple’s 1984 advert that launched the Macintosh computer.

Last week, after rumours of an acquisition had been circulating for some time, card network American Express announced that it was acquiring fintech company Kabbage. Under the terms of the agreement, American Express will acquire Kabbage’s team and its full suite of fintech products, data platform and intellectual property built for small businesses. Kabbage’s products include access to flexible lines of credit, online bill payment, cashflow visualisation tools, e-gift certificates, and the ability to centralise funds through the company’s recently launched business checking account.

The GSMA has confirmed that all major equipment vendors, Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia and ZTE, have completed its NESAS (Network Equipment Security Assurance Scheme). The scheme is jointly led by the GSMA and 3GPP, with all vendors welcome to be assessed. These two bodies have collaborated to create these standards.

This week, the ioXt Alliance, a global IoT security alliance, announced that major technology companies and manufacturers including Google, T-Mobile, Silicon Labs and more, have certified a wide range of devices through the ioXt Alliance Certification Program. Devices certified secure by the ioXt Alliance include smartphones, smart home, lighting controls, IoT Bluetooth, smart retail, portable medical, pet trackers, routers and automotive technology.

It was reported this week that Facebook had launched a financial product group, with the internal name F2, to promote ‘payments and commerce opportunities’. Facebook Financial will be headed up by Libra co-creator David Marcus. The group will oversee Facebook’s payment projects, including a planned launch of Facebook Pay, which it plans to integrate into all of its apps. Facebook has not yet released a statement on the matter.

This week, Bloomberg reported that Google and Samsung are negotiating a major deal to give Google services more prominence on Samsung smartphones, including more control over search on the devices. Interestingly, the report also claims that this would be that Bixby is downplayed in favour of Google Assistant integration in the smartphones, which would be a major change to the voice assistant market.

This week, Hong-Kong based EMQ announced that it had raised $20 million in a Series B funding round, to support its cross-border payments efforts. The latest round of funding is led by WI Harper Group, with participation from new and existing investors including Abu Dhabi Capital, AppWorks, DG Ventures, Hard Yaka, Intudo Ventures, January Capital, Quest Venture Partners, SparkLabs Taipei, Vectr Fintech Partners, and VS Partners.

Network operator, Orange, and cloud services provider, Google Cloud, have announced a joint strategic partnership that will accelerate digital transformation within Orange’s mobile network and infrastructure. As part of the partnership, Orange will leverage Google Cloud’s expertise in AI, cloud computing, edge computing and cybersecurity. Orange will contribute its communications services and international mobile networks as part of the partnership. The agreement reiterates Orange’s Engage 2025 plan released at the end of 2019, which highlights Orange’s focus on ensuring it positions itself and its services to meet changing consumer habits in the future.
