In September, NVIDIA announced its intention to acquire Arm for an estimated $40 billion. In a blog article around the deal, NVIDIA’s CEO highlighted Arm’s role in enhancing the role of AI at NVIDIA. This has been followed by an announcement by Arm of new chip architectures intended to enhance autonomous IoT devices, such as manufacturing robots. NVIDIA has clarified that Arm will remain an independent entity under NVIDIA ownership.

This week, GPS announced that it had secured a strategic investment from strategic partner Visa. The investment is backed by UK private equity firm Dunedin and will be used to accelerate GPS’ global expansion. This week, Telia Company, a multinational mobile network operator, announced that it had agreed the sale of its international carrier business, Telia Carrier, for a value of SEK 9,450 million ($1.1 billion) to investment company Polhem Infra. The deal also contained a long-term strategic partnership agreement, to ensure that Telia’s customers continue to see the same service following the sale.

The sale is subject to regulatory approvals, including the EU and the US, and is expected to clear in the first half of 2021.

Fintech Insights - Italian Payment Companies Nexi and Sia Set to Finalise €15bn Merger

Italian payment rivals Nexi and Sia are in the process of finalising a €15bn ($17.7bn) merger that is set to create one of the largest fintechs in Europe by incorporating Sia into Nexi. The talks have not been smooth to date, with intense negotiations around governance and valuation. Unicredit is Sia’s largest client and its retention was said to be a key part of negotiations. Under the terms of the deal, Nexi’s investors will take 70% ownership of the combined entity whilst Sia’s shareholder will hold the remaining 30% stake. This development is a further indication of increasing consolidation within the payments market in Europe.

Tech Insights - Cellnex Enters IoT Market Via Partnership with Everynet

Infrastructure operator Cellnex Telecom has entered into an agreement with Everynet, an IoT network specialist, to roll out IoT networks in select European countries.

The partnership will involve the roll-out of IoT networks in the UK, Ireland and Italy. The proposed IoT networks will be based on Everynet’s LoRaWAN services and deployed using Cellnex’s cellular infrastructure. The latter includes network towers and an integrated IoT platform; enabling the real-time transmission, and analysis, of data.

Ericsson has announced it has acquired wireless edge WAN (Wide Area Network) solutions provider Cradlepoint to add to its 5G-based services portfolio. The total value of the deal has been valued at $1.1 billion with the sales set to be finalised by the end of 2020. As a result of the deal, there is expected to be a negative impact on its operating margins of 1% in 2021 and 2022.

On 21st September, Microsoft announced the acquisition of Zenimax Media and its subsidiaries (including Bethesda Game Studios, Bethesda Softworks, id Software and Zenimax Online Studios), for $7.5 billion in cash. This brings Microsoft’s games studios to a total of 23, which now house some of the best‑selling games titles of recent years.

The deal will retain the corporate structure of Zenimax Media as an autonomous subsidiary within Microsoft.

Last week, SWIFT announced that it was expanding its strategy; diversifying beyond financial messaging to include transaction management solutions.

SWIFT’s new strategy will create a platform that can orchestrate interactions between FIs (Financial Institutions) and simplify cross-border transactions. SWIFT claims that the platform has the potential to power instant and frictionless transactions between at least 4 billion accounts serviced by FIs across the SWIFT network.

Samsung has announced that its US division has signed a ₩7.9 trillion ($6.6 billion) deal with Verizon. This contract will last until the end of 2025, with Samsung providing wireless network equipment for Verizon geared towards 5G innovation.
