Twitter leaker WalkingCat has released two videos showcasing potential Samsung smart glasses products. The glasses are both a ‘Lite’ model and what Samsung is calling ‘Next Wearable Computing’ for a more advanced AR (augmented reality) glasses product.  The Lite model was shown to be controlled through a Samsung smartwatch, as well as a keyboard. The Next Wearable Computing model was shown accepting gesture controls and a light-based keyboard.

This week, leading automotive manufacturer Toyota, self-driving vehicle start-up Aurora and parts supplier Denso announced that they had entered a partnership to jointly develop a driverless version of Toyota’s vehicles for use in a robotaxi fleet. The first vehicles will be based on the Toyota Sienna, which will integrate the Aurora Driver solution. By the end of 2021, Aurora expects to have designed, built, and begun testing an initial fleet of these vehicles near its areas of development.

The ACM (Authority for Consumers & Markets) has outlined proposals to changes in legislation that allow for greater collaboration between operators for the deployment of base stations, access to network spectrum and national roaming.  Under these new guidelines, operators will be allowed to negotiate on the sharing of mast sites, in addition to the ability to lease network spectrum to other network operators and service providers on an ad-hoc basis.

(BNPL) Buy Now Pay Later is a payment model that allows consumers to defer payment for online purchases, either paying the whole balance at a later date, or splitting the cost into equal instalments. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), who regulate financial services firms and financial markets in the UK, recently published the findings of a review into the unsecured credit market. The report found that the use of BNPL products nearly quadrupled in 2020 and is now at £2.7 billion ($3.7 billion), with 5 million people using these products since the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic. The report also found that more than one in 10 customers of ‘a major bank’ using BNPL were already in arrears.

Following the agreement of a wholesale deal with Proximus, a Belgian telecommunications operator, Youfone will launch fixed and mobile services in Belgium during April 2021.

Youfone is a telecommunications operator based in the Netherlands, whose product portfolio includes SIM-only mobile services, fixed broadband, and TV subscriptions. The company also offers triple-play services; providing combined TV, Internet, and fixed calling packages for its customers.

This week, it emerged that Mastercard will be raising interchange fees for payments from UK consumers to EEA (European Economic Area) merchants, from 0.3% to 1.5% for credit card transactions and from 0.2% to 1.15% for debit card transactions.

In a reply to an article covering the change, Mastercard claimed that “as a result of the UK leaving the European Economic Area, Mastercard will adapt interchange rates on UK cards to the commitments it gave the European Commission in 2019 for non-EEA card transactions. In practice, only EEA merchants making e-commerce sales to UK cardholders will see a change.

WhatsApp has announced that as of 8th February 2021, their privacy policies will change and that users must accept these updated terms if they wish to continue using the app. Of the changes that WhatsApp made of its privacy policy was the removal of a passage describing how users could opt out of sharing their data with Facebook, who acquired WhatsApp in 2014. This passage was replaced with a statement reserving the right of WhatsApp to share user data with Facebook, saying: ‘WhatsApp receives information from, and shares information with, the other Facebook Companies. We may use the information we receive from them, and they may use the information we share with them, to help operate, provide, improve, understand, customize, support, and market our services and their offerings.’

Telco Insights - Deutsche Telekom in Talks to Sell its T-Mobile Netherlands Unit

This week, reports emerged that Tier 1 European MNO (Mobile Network Operator) Deutsche Telekom was looking to sell its Dutch subsidiary T-Mobile Netherlands. Citing sources close to the matter, Dutch financial newspaper Financieele Dagblag claimed that Deutsche Telekom is looking to sell the unit to private equity investors in a deal worth between $4.9 billion and $6.1 billion.
