This week Canadian eCommerce company Shopify is continuing to expand its areas of interest. Shopify is entering the online grocery sector, through the launch of a new e-commerce app, which will enable retailers subscribed to Shopify to add groceries to their offerings. The app is claimed to be a one-of-a-kind feature designed by supplier GreenDropShip. Shopify’s core business is centred around creating platforms for small start-up companies to make their own online business. This is then supplemented by offering sales processing tools, and Shopify brand hardware and software for its users.

Etisalat announces its intention to partner with Rakuten Mobile, in order to develop an OpenRAN-based network architecture capable of supporting virtualised network functionalities. The Etisalat Group is a leading telecommunications service provider based in the UAE, which provides network services to 149 million subscribers across Africa and the Middle East. Rakuten Mobile is a Japanese mobile network operator and a fully-owned subsidiary of Rakuten, which also offers MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) functionalities.

This week, identity verification vendor Jumio announced that it had secured an investment of $150 million from Great Hill Partners, a private equity firm. The investment is stated to be the ‘single largest funding round in the digital identity space’. The investment is targeted at automating its identity verification solutions; expanding the breadth of its KYX Platform and growing its suite of AML (Anti Money Laundering) compliance services.

Dish Network, a communications service provider, has announced the takeover of Republic Wireless, an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network operators) that operates over T-Mobile’s cellular network in the US. Republic Wireless was launched in 2010, with its first full commercial launch occurring in 2013. Initially, Republic Wireless used Sprint’s CDMA network, however it signed a deal with T-Mobile in 2016 to leverage its GSM network on a wholesale basis.

This week, UK digital-only bank Starling Bank announced that it had raised an additional £272 million ($377 million) in funding. This new round was led by Fidelity Management & Research Company, alongside Qatar Investment Authority, RPMI Railpen (the Railways Pension Scheme), and Millennium Management. The new investment values the company at £1.1 billion ($1.53 million) prior to the funding round. The new funding is aimed at supporting Starling’s continued growth, primarily to support a targeted expansion of Starling’s lending in the UK, as well as to launch Starling in Europe and for anticipated mergers and acquisitions.

Telefonica has completed a pilot using Huawei’s WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technology to implement 600G and 800G transmission speeds across its IP-based network. Telefonica is a telecommunications operator based in Spain, whose product portfolio includes fixed and mobile connectivity solutions, as well as broadband and TV services. Huawei is a Chinese multinational technology company that designs and sells telecommunications equipment and consumer electronics.
