Following the closure of Infobip’s first institutional investment from One Equity Partners, Infobip has announced plans to acquire OpenMarket for approximately $300 million. OpenMarket is a provider of cloud-based mobile messaging solutions to enterprises, including global one-way and two-way SMS, MMS, RCS, and short codes, local numbers, and text-enabled toll-free messaging solutions. OpenMarket works with operators to deliver global A2P SMS and other mobile messaging solutions for some of the world’s biggest enterprises.

Huawei has issued a statement announcing that it will be selling the Honor smartphone brand to a consortium of Chinese companies in which it has no stake. The statement notes that the company has been under ‘tremendous pressure’ thanks to its inability to source ‘technical elements’ owing to US trade restrictions.

This week, US Bank signed an agreement with data sharing network Akoya to facilitate the use of Open Banking by its customers. The agreement will enable users to share their data with third-party services via the Akoya Data Access Network, without sharing usernames and passwords. US Bank is the first sign up for the service since it was acquired in February 2020 by a coalition of Fidelity Investments, The Clearing House and eleven member banks.

South Korea’s three major telecommunications providers have called for an auction on 2G, 3G and 4G LTE networks ahead of government-led redistribution next year. Network spectrum licenses held by SK Telecom, KT Corporation and LG Uplus are due to expire in 2021 and will subsequently be redistributed by the KCC (Korea Communications Commission), the telecommunications regulatory body established by the South Korean government.

The proposed merger between Teladoc Health and Livongo has been finalised, after both companies’ shareholders overwhelmingly voted to approve the deal, which is estimated at a value of $18.5 billion. The deal, which will see Livongo become a subsidiary of Teladoc, means the latter now stands to become one of the biggest players in the digital health space.

Following a previous strategic investment in YellowPepper in May 2018 and a March 2020 collaboration on a real-time P2P system in Peru, Visa has announced that it is to acquire payments technology company YellowPepper. YellowPepper offers mobile banking and payment solutions to FIs across nine Latin American markets and provides APIs to enable payment flows from multiple rails through a single connection. The deal will broaden Visa’s reach across Latin America and the Caribbean through YellowPepper’s platform as well as leveraging its large customer base of 5 million active monthly users and 50 commercial clients.

In September, NVIDIA announced its intention to acquire Arm for an estimated $40 billion. In a blog article around the deal, NVIDIA’s CEO highlighted Arm’s role in enhancing the role of AI at NVIDIA. This has been followed by an announcement by Arm of new chip architectures intended to enhance autonomous IoT devices, such as manufacturing robots. NVIDIA has clarified that Arm will remain an independent entity under NVIDIA ownership.

Telco Insights - Telia Agrees Sale of its Carrier Unit to Investment Company for $1 Billion

This week, Telia Company, a multinational mobile network operator, announced that it had agreed the sale of its international carrier business, Telia Carrier, for a value of SEK 9,450 million ($1.1 billion) to investment company Polhem Infra. The deal also contained a long-term strategic partnership agreement, to ensure that Telia’s customers continue to see the same service following the sale.

The sale is subject to regulatory approvals, including the EU and the US, and is expected to clear in the first half of 2021.
