British challenger bank Monzo has withdrawn its application for a US banking licence after it was told that the licence was unlikely to be approved by the OCC (Office of the Comptroller of the Currency). The company began its bid for a US licence in April 2020, in an effort to expand its userbase. Monzo soft launched its card offering in the US in June 2019, through a partnership with domestic lender Sutton Bank. Since the news broke, the company has stated that it plans to continue to build and scale its product offering in the US through the continuation of these existing partnerships, as well as investing further in the UK.

Telco Insights - 5G Spectrum Auction in Norway Raises $445 million

The auction in Norway for 5G spectrum has raised nearly NOK 3.9 billion ($445 million), with four companies paying for an allocation of 400 MHz in the 3.6 GHz range and 190 MHz of TDD spectrum in the 2.6 GHz range. The companies that have acquired the spectrum are Telenor, Telia, Altibox and Ice. As part of this process, bidders had to commit to providing broadband services that offer download speeds of at least 100 Mbps. In turn, there was a price break of approximately NOK 480 million ($55 million).

Deutsche Telekom and Tele2 have announced that T-Mobile Netherlands will be sold to WP/AP Telecom Holdings for $6 billion (€5.1 billion), concluding Deutsche Telekom’s strategic review of the subsidiary. The transaction between Deutsche Telekom, Tele 2 and WP/AP Telecom Holdings marks the conclusion of Deutsche Telekom’s internal review of T-Mobile Netherlands.

The German federal government is looking to expand a recently published EU proposal that smartphones should have replacement parts and software updates for 5 years, while tablets should have 6 years. The current proposal also would require that part prices for replacements be published and remain unchanged throughout the replacement cycle, but does not provide guidelines on such pricing. The parts are to be available at a maximum delivery time of 5 days.

Reward-based debit card start-up Point has raised $46.5 million in Series B funding, led by Valar Ventures, with participation from Breyer Capital, YC Continuity and Human Capital. San Francisco-based Point was launched in July 2020 as a consumer banking app combined with a debit card; aimed at reproducing the experience of a credit card without the need for a credit check, by offering a debit card with point-based rewards. The card comes with an annual fee of $49.

Samsung has announced that its SmartThings platform will now support edge computing, as part of a move away from the Groovy legacy platform. As part of this, the company indicated that the platform would allow support for Zigbee and Z-Wave, with more connectivity forthcoming in the future, including Matter, the standard promoted by the organisation of the same name formerly known as CHIP (Connected Home over IP).
