With the launch of the Apple Watch in 2014, smartwatches have become far more prominent than they were in previous years. The trend can arguably be said to have begun with Sony’s SmartWatch in 2012, which had its ancestry in devices like Microsoft’s Smart Personal Objects Technology in 2003. A full range of players have now entered the ecosystem, from IT companies to jewellers, and releases throughout 2016 have begun to mark a shift in how the technology is perceived.
