Japan is often the birthplace for the next generation of technology development. LTE is no exception to this and NTT DoCoMo will naturally be at the forefront of progress as this article stated two days ago. Of course there are a number of other countries, vendors and mobile network operators around the world, specifically in North America, other parts of the Far East and Europe that are also developing the next generation of mobile broadband.
When I last blogged about LTE a couple of months ago, I was asking questions like “When?” & ”Why?”. For the “Why?” question, I concluded that there is more than one answer. Here’s one answer.

Cisco forecast in The Cisco Visual Network Index (VNI) that globally, mobile data traffic will double every year, increasing 66 times between 2008 and 2013. Mobile data traffic will grow at a CAGR of 131% between 2008 and 2013, reaching over 2 exabytes per month by 2013. Cisco also said that almost 64% of the world’s mobile traffic will be video by 2013. Mobile video will grow at a CAGR of 150% between 2008 and 2013.

Aside from terminology though, we think that LTE has the potential to be a disruptive technology in the consumer electronics device space via embedded chipsets in a list of devices including, but not limited to portable media/MP3 and MP4 players, personal navigation devices, digital & video cameras, portable game consoles, TVs & PVRs. So here’s the first answer to the “Why LTE?” question.
